What Is PTSD?
PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms often include:
- Flashbacks or nightmares
- Hypervigilance or jumpiness
- Avoidance of reminders of the trauma
- Negative changes in mood or thoughts
- Trouble sleeping, anxiety, or emotional numbness
These symptoms are real, painful, and disruptive — but they don’t have to be permanent.

Let’s Break the Silence. Treatment Works.
PTSD is real. PTSD is treatable. And help is available.
Many people associate Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with military service, and while it’s true that many Veterans experience PTSD, they are not alone. PTSD can affect anyone who has lived through trauma — from sexual assault survivors to car accident victims, from those impacted by natural disasters to people living through domestic abuse or mass violence.
Despite how common it is, most people with PTSD never receive the care they need. Stigma, shame, and a lack of awareness keep too many people suffering in silence. But there’s hope — because evidence-based treatments for PTSD really do work.
Let’s use this month to turn up the volume on healing, hope, and support. PTSD doesn’t have to be a life sentence — with the right help, recovery is not just possible, it’s expected.
