Did you know there are two types of addiction? It is defined in two distinct ways, physical dependence and psychological addiction.
Physical addiction appears in two forms within the body. The first is a biological state in which the body adapts to the presence of a drug, causing the substance to have less effect over time. This phenomenon is known as tolerance.
The second form is cue exposure. This occurs when the brain overreacts to the drug or to environmental signals associated with the drug. For example, an alcoholic who walks into a bar may feel a stronger urge to drink because the setting itself acts as a cue.
Psychological addiction is different. It is not driven by physical tolerance or exposure to cues. Instead, it involves the cognitive and emotional aspects of addictive behavior and withdrawal. People often experience pleasure from the behavior or use it compulsively in response to stress.
Common symptoms of psychological addiction include cravings, anxiety when attempting to stop, depression when not using the substance, irritability and restlessness during withdrawal, and mood swings when trying to quit.
